With all of the negative advertising and high cost you would think that our youth would run a mile from smoking. Yet in the USA alone it is estimated that each day 3,200 people younger than 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette. Most is even more concerning is that each day 2,100 youth transition from casual smokers to regular smokers.
The three tools that governments use to dissuade smokers are shame, fear and high cost. Yet these don’t seem to have an effect on smokers starting the habit. The problem with young smokers is that they have that youthful feeling of invincibility. When they smoke it doesn’t hurt. They don’t feel sick. Plus those casual smokers never really planned to become nicotine addicts.
It’s no secret that nicotine is addictive and the habitual nature of smoking deeply entrenches in a smokers life. It becomes chemically and psychologically addictive. The casual smoker gets lulled into a false sense of comfort. They just have a cigarette now and again. Then they buy a packet. They find more situations and reasons to smoke those cigarettes in the packet. And then before they know it they are consuming packet after packet.
Governments have not yet really attacked the reasons why smokers begin. The fact is smoking starts for social reasons. When I was a kid at school all the “tough” and “edgy” kids smoked. It was a form of rebellion. The place where youth doesn’t care if it hurts itself. Youth can be an age where we can’t imagine growing old and facing the consequences of our actions. It really is time now for the Governments who fund advertising finally create content that connects to youth. We need to destroy the notion that smoking is somehow cool or edgy.
I have noticed a disturbing trend in cable TV shows where the cool characters are smokers. I’m not sure if this is the writers creating them or whether this is just product placement. But the reality is that this type of portrayal (making addiction cool) can only serve to hurt our youth who become our future adults.
It’s also time to elevate all methods to quitting smoking. Hypnosis has been shown time and time again to be effective in the fight against nicotine.
